The Simplicity Of A Wireless Network Card

The wireless network card had a few names. So for reference, you should know that they are also referred to as a PC CARD, or a PCMCIA CARD. This stands for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, (now you know why it's abbreviated).

Wireless network card are traditionally used in laptops and plug into an expansion slot. The reason they are not commonly used in desktop computers, is because most desktops don't provide slots for wireless network cards. Many laptops and mobile computer devices such as PDA's etc already come with Wi-Fi radio in-built. If this is the case then you will not need to buy an additional wireless network card.

If after checking your laptop you still require a wireless network card then take note of the following. There are 3 types of PC, or PCMCIA card. Type I, Type II, and Type III. All of these cards come in the same rectangular size, 85.6mm x 54mm. But, each has a different thickness and are used for different devices.

A Type I card is used for adding additional Ram to your computer and is around 3.3mm Thick. A Type II card is used for modems and networks and is around 5.5mm thick. Type III cards are the thickest of the 3 at 10.5mm and are used for devices such as portable disk drives.

Once you have installed your wireless network card and connected the device to your network, you can immediately make use of all the benefits it will bring. Of course you will be able to share the same internet connection, but this is just the start. You will also be able to communicate in a variety of way with al the other computers and additional devices on the network. Supposing you have some important work on your desktop PC that you wish to continue working on while you are away from home. You no longer need to use fragile floppy disks and CD's, or connect a cable from one computer to the other. You can simply transfer the file(s) across your network and use them on your laptop to continue your work, or give that important presentation to the boss.

So, your wireless network card will need to be a Type II Wi-Fi Radio PC Card. It is simple to install and once you have done so, you just need to run the software that came with it and add it to your network. It's as simple as that.
