3 Easy Steps To Aid Your Wireless Security
With the ever-increasing need to use our PC's and laptops in places where it is not practical to connect them using wires, We are turning more and more to the wide range of wireless devices available. However, one of the biggest problems we face when doing this is ensuring the security of our data. Wireless security is one of the biggest technological issues at the moment and so, in this article we will look at when we are most vulnerable and also at how we can prevent become a victim to hackers and criminals.
Although we still need to be careful, we know that as long as we take the right precautions, we are fairly safe on the internet. I for one, use internet banking regularly and make many purchases over the web. I am also well aware that I am not in a minority. But I do make sure that before sending any private data over the web, I am in a secure environment. I also employ good antivirus, anti phishing, and firewall software. This is a must for anybody using the internet for these types of activities. But, if you intend on continuing these activities when you are on the move, (perhaps on the train or in a hotel) then it is important to take extra steps to ensure the safety of your data. This is where wireless security comes in.
Unfortunately, when you are seeking advice on wireless security you will find many abbreviations and acronyms, so let's start by looking at what some of these mean. First all we have W.A.P. This stands for Wireless Access Point and if you connect on the move you are sure to make use of these. One of the main problems with W.A.P's is that they do not have any encryption enabled by default. What this means is that your data is not coded before you send it, so anyone intercepting your information will be able to read it. This moves us on to our next abbreviation which is W.E.P, or Wireless Equivelant Privacy. This is a form of encryption but it is 100% effective. Although Most Wireless Access Points do actually Support WEP it is frequently not enabled and WEP has some flaws that an experienced hacker will be able to get through. WEP will generally have 2 options, which are 'SHARED KEY' and 'OPEN SYSTEM'. Always make sure you set the authentification method to Shared Key as this is the option that encrypts your data.
Next we move on to W.P.A, which is an abbreviation for Wi-fi Protected Access. If you are ever faced with the option of both WEP and WPA then always opt for WPA. It's encryption methods offer far better wireless security and with them, greater peace of mind. You may well find however, that you will need to download some firmware updates in order to use this method. One thing that is often over-looked is passwords. Simply by changing your defaulted administrator password you will increase your wireless security a great deal! Make sure you use a good passsword of at least 8 characters and that it consist of letters and numbers. Don't be tempted to use actual words that are in the dictionary just because they are easier to remember. If, after researching the information available on this website you are still uncertain about any aspect of wireless security then help is not far away. You will find out anything you need to know simply by typing your query into a search engine.
